When it comes to security deposits, most tenants are just as confused as the rest of us. What exactly does a renter need to do in order to get a deposit back? Lucky for us, California has strict renters laws that lay out the exact rules of what a security deposit can be used for.

In general deposits may only be deducted for damage and unpaid rent left by the tenant. What it cannot be use for is norm wear-and-tear to the apartment unit. Here is a quick list of what is considered normal wear-and-tear in your Van Nuys apartment.

  • Old and fainted paint or wallpaper
  • Old plumbing from regular use
  • Old blinds and curtains
  • Worn out rugs
  • Carpet damage from furniture (non-excessive)
  • Wall dents cause by door handles
  • Broken lightbulbs
  • Pin holes in walls from hanging pictures (only for a non-excessive amount)
